We are looking for a modern Butler to ensure that the home and it’s contents are correctly maintained, that fellow staff are made aware of what is happening in the home at any given moment, whilst ensuring that The Patrons and their guests have everything they require.

Roles and Responsibilities


Preparation for, and the service of: drinks, canapés and meals.

Cleaning and polishing of The Patron’s and guest’s shoes.

Valeting for The Patron and gentleman guests.

Organizing dry cleaning (but not without informing The Patron).

Laying out of clothes if ever requested.

Ensuring that the wardrobes are kept clean, neat and perfectly organised.

Packing and unpacking luggage for Sir (and sometimes madam).

Running errands and shopping as required by The Patron &/or the house; or delegating it to be done by someone else.

It would be an advantageous if candidates drive and are confident to drive in London.

Ensuring the cleaning, maintaining and the correct storage of: silver, crystal and china.

Maintaining wine inventories, and ensuring that the necessary steps are taken when stocks are low Keeping the wine fridges/cellars clean and tidy.

Ensuring that stocks of special items are maintained, (i.e. preferred coffee or specific toiletries etc etc).

Maintaining the correct storage of cigars and ordering stock as required.

Ordering of soft drinks, mineral waters and pantry stores.

Ordering of cut flowers and arranging as necessary, ensuring that they are then watered and maintained “Perfectly”.

Replacing candles and scented candles and ordering as required.

Cleaning of the crystal chandeliers and the glass lamp shades.

Polishing of the ornamental silver, i.e. picture frames, trophies, etc.

Cleaning of the grates and laying of fires.

Assisting with the polishing and buffing of wooden floors.

Dealing with trades and surveying their work, or taking delivery of parcels. (If in doubt, refer the caller to the Private Office).

Taking telephone messages, censoring calls and visitors, and passing on to The Patron as necessary.

PA type Duties

Making appointments and reservations as requested.

Processing telephone, email and written correspondence.

The ability to co-ordinate chauffeurs & liaise with travel agents for The Patrons and their family and guests.

Monthly justification of petty-cash & credit card purchases/expenses drawn against business account.

Maintaining Inventories (To be defined).

Liaising with Private Office to ensure that information is passed, to allow accurate entries in The Patron’s (electronic) diary.

Maintaining Updated Internal Telephone Books (Suppliers and Contractors).

Maintaining names and address for Christmas Card Lists (Staff and Suppliers).

Human Resources

Assisting with the management of domestic staff.

Staff: sourcing, interviewing, review of terms of employment; preparation of work schedules along with training to be given as required.

Maintaining accurate details of the domestic staff’s ‘days-off & holidays’.

Special Projects

Assisting with projects, including: Special Parties, House Parties, Charity Events, Design Projects, which might include advising on back of house requirements, landscaping or small interior design projects.

Research work – as directed.

Purchasing

Managing the purchase, preparation and delivery of gifts & flowers.

Sourcing: Linens, Table-ware, Home Decoration, Antiques, Contemporary Furniture, Objets d’art and obscure items (eg. out of print books or porcelain that is no longer made).

Shopping for specific items as directed.
