Roles and Responsibilities


We need someone with relevant horticultural training and a passion for gardening, excellent plants knowledge, and who is happy working outdoors all year round but also enjoys garden planning and organisation. The gardens of this beautiful 5-acre garden is currently undergoing complete restoration and transformation. The work is varied, we have a mix of formal gardens, kitchen gardens, greenhouses, fruit production (including espaliers), woodland garden and complicated water features.

The applicant must be flexible, enjoy being part of a team, IT literate, hardworking and reliable, comfortable with operating garden machinery (any certificates an advantage). Experience of working in an Estate type setting would be useful.

The garden team will need to be able to interact with VIPs and owners alike. All successful Candidates would be required to sign a non-disclosure agreement and be subject to a CRB check.

Technical skills

Work alongside the garden team to ensure that the gardens are ready for occupation at all times.

Ensure that the gardens are presented to a 7 star standard in the most efficient manner possible.

A ‘can-do’ attitude, including a willingness to work flexibly and to support the wider organisation and its goals.

Excellent attention to details.

To maintain and develop the Gardens under the supervision and direction of the

Head Gardener or his deputy.

Planting and maintaining a wide variety of plants and shrubs.

Apply manures and mulches.

Carry out pruning work, using ladders, scaffolding and mechanical where appropriate following safe working practices at all times. (Training will be given where appropriate).

Maintain garden paths in a clean and safe condition.

Carry out watering and maintenance of glasshouse plants and extensive range of pots.

Maintenance of all the garden water features to ensure adequate flow and presentation and cleaning.

Composting of garden waste using mechanical aids (training will be given).

Staff management / Communication

To ensure all workshop and plant areas are maintained in an immaculate condition, adopting a clean as you go attitude.

Ensuring that the uniform standard is maintained, clean and in an excellent condition.

To participate in training and meeting as deemed necessary.

To greet and maintain an excellent working relationship with colleagues.

Health & Safety

To ensure that all work undertaken is done so in a safe manner and in accordance with relevant approved codes of practice.

To attend H&S Committee meeting as and when required.

To be aware of and comply with safe working practices as laid down under the Health and Safety Acts as applicable to your place of work. This will include your awareness of any specific hazards at your work place.

The wearing of appropriate protective clothing provided by or recommended by the Company will be obligatory.

To ensure that any accidents to staff, guests or visitors are reported in accordance with correct procedures.

To attend 6 monthly Statutory Fire, Health & Safety training and to be fully conversant with and abide by all rules concerning Fire, Health & Safety.

To be fully conversant with: Risk Assessments for your department, COSHH, Fire & Bomb procedures.

To comply with all Health & Safety regulation to ensure the safety of yourself, staff, contractors and Beneficiaries.

Use, and be responsible for the safe operation of all hand tools and machinery within the gardens, ensuring that safe working practices and all health and safety regulations are observed at all times.

Training

To attend all training courses as and when required.

Preferred Skills

Ability to work efficiently on an independent basis as well as within a wider team.

Attention to details, and to the personal needs and requirements of the Owner and guests.

A confident and positive attitude and the ability to engage with a diverse range of colleagues and clients.

A passion for horticulture.

The ability to work flexibly and under pressure – sometimes with limited notice to cover periods of high intensity.

Previous experience of working in private residential services.

In addition it is expected that the post holder will carry out any other duties that may be reasonably requested by the Head Gardener or member of the senior management team.

Eligibility


5+ years experience as a professional gardener in a large garden.

NVQ 3 and above
