Our client is looking for a committed and proactive individual to take on the role of Factor, of a private estate in Lanarkshire, Scotland. 

The Estate includes a substantial historic house along with extensive grounds, including gardens, woodlands, cottages and agricultural grazing land.

It is vital that candidates can show he/she is "at home" and "enthusiastic" about working in a rural setting!

Roles and Responsibilities

The main areas of Responsibility include:

  1. Land Management, everything, including responsibility to administer, maintain and develop, woodland(s), agricultural land(s), grazing/pastures, rivers and wetlands, including ponds and water features, gardens, meadows and grassed areas along with any other natural site for conservation or development. The Factor may also handle land-ownership issues, and would create long-term protection and development plans, including the creation and implementation of sustainable land management policies (including the use of fertilizers and pesticides etc), along with the proper monitoring of work practices to ensure adherence to legal requirements.
  2. Staffing: management of land and outside workers.(groundsmen/gardeners/contract workers etc may also include drivers).
  3. Gamekeeping and Animal Husbandry, including responsibility for the breeding, feeding and tending of both wild & farm reared creatures including birds, game, animals and pets. Also, total responsibility for pest control across whole estate.
  4. Security, including proper maintenance of boundary fences, gates and stiles. Also, ensuring public rights of way are in proper condition. Signage is visible and in good repair and warnings and danger signs are in evidence where necessary.
  5. Estate Maintenance all grounds and outbuildings related maintenance issues will fall to the factor, while assistance may also be required with jobs relating to The Castle
  6. Financial: budgeting and financial forecasting for all of the above

In addition to the outside duties, the factor's day-to-day responsibilities will include: managing a staff; administrative duties (such as, timely bill paying & record keeping), requiring a familiarity with computers and Microsoft Office; carrying out and overseeing maintenance and repairs; coordinating these with the the needs of the owner’s family and guests; organising and overseeing larger scale works; resolving unexpected matters; the security of grounds and property; dealing with tradesmen and other professionals; and many other general estate tasks as required.

The candidate must be honest, motivated, organised, flexible, polite, have good leadership skills, and be able to multi-task when situations require. 

Applicants should be self-reliant and capable of coping with emergencies as they arise, and should be prepared to manage an organic, toxin-free estate. Guidance will be available from the owners as needed.  Candidates must have a proven track record in sole-working, and must hold a current UK driving license.

Ideally the candidate will have background experience in organically managing estates, gardens and pasture land as well as general outdoor skills. Experience managing and dealing with a small staff is essential.  Suitable training and PPE will be provided for this role where necessary. 

There may be an additional part or full-time role available for the successful candidate’s partner, depending on experience and qualifications.
