Our clients are looking for a ‘Modern Butler/Houseman’ to ensure that their 2 homes are correctly maintained, staff and contractors are organised and the family have everything they require

The client’s main home is in Knightsbridge, and they have a holiday home in St. Tropez, which is used predominantly from June to September each year

  • In France the family employ a chef, housekeepers and a captain (for a day boat)
  • In London the family employ a housekeeper

 

Candidates must show: they have worked in respected private homes or hospitality environments, as a butler or in a front-of-house position, are happy to wear several hats, and be able to provide a level of service that can be described as informal, yet impeccable and smooth.

Roles and Responsibilities

Butler/Houseman duties

  • The reception of the family & guests
  • Preparation for, and the service of: drinks, canapés and meals
  • Ensuring the cleaning, maintaining and the correct storage of tableware
  • Maintaining wine inventories
  • Keeping the wine fridges/cellars clean and tidy
  • Ensuring that stocks of special items are maintained (i.e. preferred coffee or specific toiletries etc)
  • Ordering soft drinks, mineral waters and pantry stores
  • Overseeing the ordering of cut-flowers and arranging as necessary, ensuring they are properly watered and maintained
  • Replacing candles and scented candles and ordering as required
  • Assisting with the polishing and buffing of wooden floors
  • Valeting
  • Cleaning and polishing of the family’s shoes
  • Ensuring wardrobes are kept clean, neat and perfectly organised
  • Management of dry cleaning
  • Assisting with packing and unpacking luggage
  • Running errands and shopping and/or delegating as required
  • Driving if and when required
  • While in France the family employ a chef, however when in London, they would like to employ someone who is able (and happy) to step into the kitchen to prepare and cook simple, healthy meals or snacks as and when required (instruction can be provided if necessary).

 

House-manager/PA duties

  • Dealing with contractors/trades and surveying their work
  • Processing telephone, email and written correspondence
  • Managing the delivery of parcels
  • The ability to co-ordinate travel arrangements for the family
  • Making appointments and reservations as requested
  • Monthly justification of petty-cash & credit card purchases/expenses drawn against business account
  • Maintaining Inventories
  • Maintaining updated internal telephone books (suppliers and contractors)
  • Maintaining names and address for Christmas card lists (staff and suppliers)

 

Staff management

  • Management of domestic staff
  • Staff: assist with sourcing, interviewing, preparation of terms of employment; preparation of work schedules along with training to be given as required
  • Maintaining staff rosters, keeping work and holiday rosters

 

Special projects

  • Assisting with projects, including: special parties, house parties, charity events, design projects, which might include advising on back of house requirements, landscaping or interior design projects
  • Research – as directed

 

Purchasing

  • Managing the purchase, preparation and delivery of gifts & flowers
  • Assisting the client to source: linens, table-ware, antiques, contemporary furniture, objets d’art and obscure items (e.g. out of print books or porcelain that is no longer made)
  • Shopping for specific items as directed
