Head Gardener – Private Estate
Ascot, SL5
£50,000 to £60,000 per annum
Job Description
A highly experienced Head Gardener with an accredited horticultural qualification (Level 3 or above) is sought to play a leading role on a stunning 36 acre private estate in Ascot, Berkshire.
This position would suit a proactive, committed, and hands-on Head Gardener who has demonstrable experience of working in a team and a good understanding of organic, biodynamic, and sustainable practices is essential as they are looking to convert the entire estate to this and moving away from your traditional chemical heavy garden practices. Plus expertise in garden design, woodland management, project procurement, safe working practices, and garden machinery and licensing are essential.
The Head Gardener will lead and manage a committed team, to ensure that the gardens and wider estate are maintained to the highest possible standards. The ability to motivate and support the development of the existing team is highly desirable. Reporting to the management team, and the family's landscape designer who is located in the US, the Head Gardener will be required to manage external contractors when necessary. As Head Gardener you will oversee the garden budget, maintenance schedules, and seasonal planting plans.
The Head Gardener will be expected to brief the management team on garden projects on a regular basis, so good communication skills are vital.
The estate encompasses approximately 36-acres of gardens, tennis court, an outdoor swimming pool, rose garden, potager, hot and cold houses and woodland. In addition to the main estate, the Head Gardener will also be responsible for overseeing the management and planting of a large terrace at the Principal’s London penthouse.
This is a rare opportunity for a talented gardener to take a significant step in their career and to utilise their varied skillsets.
Candidates must have proven management experience, preferably working in both a private and public garden, and hold a full UK driving licence.
Hours: Monday to Friday, 7:00am–5:00pm. Some Saturdays and Bank Holidays required during busy periods.
