We are seeking an experienced, accomplished hands-on Head Housekeeper, to work on a privately-owned estate, situated in the Surrey Hills, a 10-minute drive from the center of Guildford/railway station. The Estate is used extensively by the owners and their family and is busy throughout the year

The Head Housekeepermay have gathered experience across a spectrum of work environments, including Deluxe or Boutique Hotels, Private Yachting and Aircraft. However candidates should also be able to show recent experience gathered in respected private households 

Working under The House Manager, The Head Housekeeper will manage a team of housekeepers and kitchen porters, and will need to nurture close working relationships with other members of the household team, including private office team, drivers and a large security contingent, all of whom are dedicated to delivering the highest possible levels of service to The Principals, Their Family & Their Guests

The Head Housekeeperwill need to show she is enthusiastic and an organised team-player who is hands-on and prepared to do whatever it takes to keep the household running smoothly.She will need to ensure that her teammaintain and present the house, annexes and outbuildings in pristine condition, and in a constant ready state during periods of non-occupation. Candidates must show enthusiasm for their work and exhibit a practiced, keen eye-for-detail, strive for perfect results and will need to effortlessly enforce the old-fashioned approach that “if we do a job, it should be done properly”

This is essentially a live-out, 5-day a week role, where candidates will need to offer flexibility and be available on weekends, to work evenings and some overtime (paid) as needed

Roles and Responsibilities

HOUSEKEEPING & CLEANING hands-on leadership of the housekeeping team, leading from the front, The Head Housekeeper will oversee daily cleaning and deep-cleaning duties, including but not limited to: preparing bedrooms and bathrooms, salons and dining rooms along with the proper care for fine furniture and hard and soft surfaces; art; antiques; soft furnishings and the polishing and care for silver, brass, china, etc.

LAUNDRY Stepping-in to help in the laundry with washing (hand and machine), drying, ironing and valeting and lady’s maid duties. Returning washed and pressed items to the correct locations.

WARDROBES Overseeing the maintenance of the wardrobes’ of The Principals, their Family and Guests, with emphasis on ensuring order and the correct method of storage for any given item

STORAGE Ensuring stores and cupboards are kept in immaculate condition, with emphasis on overseeing perfect orderly storage (and maintaining accurate up-to-date inventories)

HOUSE MANAGEMENTThe Head Housekeeper will need to deputise for the House Manager, so may be required to assist with the following duties in their absence:

 

  • Assist the House-manager (and step-in to cover when necessary) to serve at table and prepare and serve drinks etc
  • Oversee, train and encourage: Serving Staff, Housekeepers, Security, Chauffeurs, Chef and porters to deliver the best standards possible
  • Liaise with the business and private PAs as necessary
  • Run errands, help with purchasing of food and household supplies, together with personal items for The Family
  • Supervise packing and unpacking
  • Supervise general household maintenance
  • Supervise contractors and suppliers
  • Liaise with Nannies regarding children’s’ schedules and out of school activities and classes
  • Be able to prepare a snack, or reheat food cooked by the Chef in his/her absence
  • Prepare/Verify household accounts, in association with the PA/Bookkeeper
  • Review staff hours/holidays/any other issues

Entry Requirements

  • A happy and cheerful disposition
  • A “can-do” attitude
  • Ability to understand the importance of Discretion and Confidentiality
  • Excellent checkable references
  • At least 5 years’ comparable experience (gathered in a 5* hotel or respected private estate will be considered a real advantage)
  • Must be happy and able to work as part of a team
  • Must show flexibility and adaptability and willingness to juggle a range of different tasks and to work extra hours to meet deadlines
  • Candidates must be happy to undergo a DBS (Criminal Record Check)

 

THE ROLE MAY ALSO REQUIRE:

  • Candidates may be asked to attend training (proper use of cleaning chemicals/H&S etc)

Eligibility

This will be a demanding role, helping to deliver 7* levels of service on a privately-owned estate. The job would suit someone who has a desire to work in a unique work environment, and who gets pleasure from delivering exceptional levels of service to their clients.

  • Salary: Circa £40K DOE

IMPORTANT

  • Candidates must live locally to Guildford
  • As normal for the hospitality industry, shifts will/may include evenings and some weekends
  • A car owner/driver would be extremely beneficial!
