We are looking for a Traditional Head Butler to work on a stunning estate in Oxfordshire.

The client keeps a formally styled household, and employs other staff, including: chef, lady's maid, housekeeper and maids, chauffeurs, caretakers, security, head-gardener, gardeners, ground-keepers and game-keepers etc.

The Head Butler is require to take charge of the household, to ensure that the Principals' needs are met; that the households are correctly maintained; service delivery is faultless, and the house staff are well-informed of the schedules of the principals', their family and guests.

In addition to the main-house there is a cricket pitch, private chapel and and various river boats. There are also numerous properties abroad, both in  Europe and further afield. The butler is also required to assist with service delivery at these locations and to travel abroad as required.

Roles and Responsibilities

Specific Duties:         

This role will be best suited to a classically trained butler who is familiar with working in formal styled households.

The head butler will be required focus on the following duties:

  1. The proper  and correct care of a substantial silver and gilt collection along with  important tableware, including antique and contemporary crystal, china and porcelain; 
  2. The proper laying of tables, including oversight for decorations which correctly fit the occasion;
  3. Cellar management that includes maintaining a wine inventory, ensuring that the necessary steps are taken when stocks are low and providing the Principal with updated inventories. While also taking responsibility for keeping the cellar(s) clean and tidy;
  4. Proper service of all meals, wine and bar drinks as required;
  5. Oversight of the house staff, whilst bringing an innate sense of style and eye-for-the-details, so ensuring the house is effortlessly and correctly presented and always welcoming to the Principals, their family and guests;
  6. Proper presentation of the gentleman's wardrobe and the ability to prepare luggage and personal items for travel/transport, to ensure a concise record is always kept of items in transit, noting briefcases, suitcases, jewellery boxes, computers, dry/wet goods, etc. etc;
  7. To take charge of engaging the services of freelance butlers as and when required and taking charge of those freelance butlers during events.

 

More general expectations will include:

  1. The need to travel to other properties both in the UK and abroad (For Christmas, Easter and Summer holidays etc)
  2. To follow the correct and defined procedures for dealing with/handling fine art and antiquities;
  3. To maintain household inventories at all properties (silver, tableware, linens etc);
  4. Keeping the “Breakages Record Book” up-to-date and informing the Principals of breakages, replacing breakages as instructed;
  5. To work closely with caretaker(s) to gain a good understanding of how house(s) operate. For example; alarm, smoke detectors, sensors, lighting, boiler room, air conditioning of Cellar, Flower Room, wardrobe area, etc. Which is obviously  important as the Butler will often be the first point of contact;
  6. It is advantageous to understand the maintenance of shotguns and the upkeep of leather goods, to include gun slips, cartridge bags, cartridge boxes etc. A Shotgun Certificate would be essential for handling shotguns and ammunition;
  7. To have a good understanding of Health and Safety in the household and to work with the appointed Health and Safety Adviser on this subject;
  8. In addition to being always immaculate in their presentation, candidates will also have to show they have an advanced understanding of the rules of Etiquette and Protocol.

Live in.  A Beautiful self-contained barn conversion by the river Thames.

It is a truly beautiful home, over three floors and is very spacious. Council tax and water is paid, but a service allowance is paid through the salary for all other utility bills.
